Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by Tianjin Weikai Bioengineering are an allogeneic cell therapy investigated for the treatment of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). These cells are isolated from the Wharton's jelly of human umbilical cords and expanded in vitro. In patients with ACLF, UC-MSCs are typically administered via intravenous infusion as an adjunct to standard medical therapy. The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to their potent immunomodulatory properties and the secretion of paracrine factors, such as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote hepatocyte survival, reduce systemic inflammation by modulating T-cell and macrophage activity, and stimulate endogenous liver regeneration and angiogenesis, thereby addressing the severe liver injury and systemic inflammatory response characteristic of ACLF.
