Overview

This experimental cell therapy, developed by Fuzhou General Hospital, is a combination treatment consisting of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (aBM-MNCs). Investigated primarily for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus, the therapy is administered via supraselective pancreatic artery cannulation. The mechanism of action involves the immunomodulatory properties of UC-MSCs and the regenerative potential of both cell types to preserve residual beta-cell function and promote the regeneration of insulin-secreting cells. Clinical study results have indicated that the treatment is well-tolerated and can lead to improved C-peptide levels and glycemic control in responders without the need for traditional immunotherapy.
