Overview

This investigational biologic therapy consists of 20% umbilical cord serum (UCS) formulated as eye drops. Developed and studied by researchers at **Chonnam National University Hospital** in South Korea, it is derived from allogeneic umbilical cord blood. The serum contains high concentrations of essential tear components, including growth factors (such as EGF and TGF-beta), neurotrophic factors (such as NGF and substance P), vitamin A, and fibronectin. These biologically active molecules facilitate corneal epithelial renewal, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The therapy is primarily used as an investigational treatment for recurrent corneal erosions, where it has demonstrated efficacy in reducing recurrence frequency compared to standard artificial tears. It is also explored for other ocular surface diseases such as severe dry eye, persistent epithelial defects, and neurotrophic keratopathy.
