The serum contains high concentrations of essential tear components, including growth factors (such as EGF and TGF-beta), neurotrophic factors (such as NGF and substance P), vitamin A, and fibronectin. These biologically active molecules facilitate corneal epithelial renewal, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The therapy is primarily used as an investigational treatment for recurrent corneal erosions, where it has demonstrated efficacy in reducing recurrence frequency compared to standard artificial tears.
