Overview

This investigational therapy consists of allogeneic umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) being evaluated for the treatment of COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The therapy functions as a biologic cell therapy that exerts potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. By secreting various paracrine factors, UC-MSCs target the aberrant immune response and 'cytokine storm' characteristic of severe COVID-19, leading to significant decreases in inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNFα. Clinical research led by Joshua M. Hare at the University of Miami has demonstrated that intravenous administration of these cells is safe and can significantly improve patient survival and recovery time in those with moderate to severe pulmonary inflammation.
