Overview

Umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCT-MSCs) combined with biomaterials represent an advanced regenerative therapy approach. UCT-MSCs are multipotent stromal/stem cells isolated from human umbilical cord tissue, known for their ability to secrete cytokines, chemokines, angiogenic factors, and growth factors that modulate inflammation and promote tissue repair. When delivered in combination with engineered biomaterial scaffolds—such as hydrogels or alginate matrices—these MSCs exhibit enhanced survival after implantation and improved therapeutic efficacy. The biomaterial component provides a supportive microenvironment that protects the MSCs from rapid clearance or degradation and can be tailored to control cell release kinetics and localize therapeutic effects at the injury site. This combination has shown promise in preclinical models for accelerating endogenous regeneration in tissues such as cartilage (e.g., osteoarthritis), by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion (IL-10, HGF), reducing apoptosis, and promoting matrix synthesis[6]. The primary indications under investigation include degenerative diseases requiring enhanced regeneration or immunomodulation.
