Overview

Umbilical cord tissue mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells isolated from the connective tissue of the human umbilical cord, most commonly from Wharton’s jelly. These cells can differentiate into various cell types including osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and neurons. UC-MSCs are being investigated for their regenerative and immunomodulatory properties in a wide range of clinical applications such as graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), knee injuries (including osteoarthritis), autoimmune diseases (e.g., diabetes, Crohn's disease), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease), cardiovascular diseases (e.g., myocardial infarction), orthopedic conditions, and non-healing bone fractures. Their mechanism of action includes modulation of immune responses and promotion of tissue repair through paracrine signaling and direct differentiation into target tissues[2][3][4][7]. They are considered promising for both allogeneic and autologous cell therapy due to their low immunogenicity and high proliferative capacity.
