Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Umkamin (also spelled Umckamin) is an herbal medicinal product developed by Hanlim Pharm. Co., Ltd., primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bronchitis. It contains an extract of the roots of *Pelargonium sidoides*, a medicinal plant native to South Africa. The extract is characterized by its complex mixture of polyphenols, coumarins, and organic acids, which contribute to its multifaceted mechanism of action. Umkamin exhibits antiviral properties by inhibiting viral entry and replication, antibacterial effects by preventing bacterial attachment to respiratory epithelial cells, and immunomodulatory activity by stimulating the production of nitric oxide and cytokines such as interferon-beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Additionally, it enhances mucociliary clearance by increasing ciliary beat frequency. In clinical trials, Umkamin has been utilized as a standard-of-care active comparator to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new herbal combinations like HL301 in patients with respiratory infections.
