Overview

Uncaria tomentosa is a woody vine native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical areas of Central and South America. Commonly known as "cat's claw," it is used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. The plant contains a variety of bioactive compounds including pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (such as mitraphylline and isopteropodine), triterpenoids derived from quinovic acid, polyphenols, flavonoids, sterols, coumarins, and glycosides[1][9]. Laboratory studies suggest that extracts from Uncaria tomentosa can inhibit inflammatory mediators (such as cytokines) and act as antioxidants by neutralizing free radicals[5][9]. It has been studied for potential benefits in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (with some evidence for reduction in joint pain), osteoarthritis, viral infections (herpes simplex virus), immune system support, cancer adjunct therapy, diabetes management support, digestive disorders like ulcers or gastritis[6][5][9]. However controlled clinical trials are limited; most uses are based on traditional practice or preliminary research. Adverse effects are rare but may include gastrointestinal upset or increased bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants[1].
