Undenatured type II collagen is a biologically active form of type II collagen derived chiefly from chicken sternum cartilage using a patented low-temperature process that preserves its natural triple-helix structure. It is distinct from hydrolyzed/denatured collagen in that the native protein epitopes remain intact. Orally administered undenatured type II collagen interacts with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (Peyer’s patches) to induce antigen-specific oral tolerance, where it transforms naïve T cells into regulatory T cells that then downregulate autoimmune responses against joint cartilage. This immunomodulatory mechanism leads to reduced inflammation and may protect and repair cartilage in conditions like osteoarthritis and, to a lesser extent, rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical and preclinical data mainly support its use as a dietary supplement for joint health, especially in osteoarthritis.
