Overview

Unifiram (DM-232) is a small molecule positive allosteric modulator of the AMPA receptor, belonging to the ampakine family of cognitive enhancers. Developed by researchers at the University of Florence, it is chemically related to sunifiram and was designed as a more potent derivative of the racetam class of nootropics. Preclinical studies in animal models have demonstrated that unifiram can significantly enhance long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus and improve performance in various learning and memory tasks, such as the Morris water maze and social recognition tests. Its mechanism involves increasing glutamatergic neurotransmission by modulating the AMPA-type glutamate receptors without significant activity at NMDA or kainate receptors. While unifiram has shown high potency and promising results in preclinical research for conditions like Alzheimer's disease and general cognitive decline, it has not transitioned into formal human clinical trials under a commercial sponsor and is primarily used as a research tool or sold in the nootropic supplement market.
