Overview

The United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation (UNIMMAP) is a standardized multiple micronutrient supplement (MMS) formulation specifically designed for pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries. Developed through a consensus between UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations University (UNU), the preparation contains 15 essential micronutrients: iron (30 mg), folic acid (400 µg), vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12, as well as zinc, selenium, copper, and iodine. UNIMMAP is intended to replace standard iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation to better address the high prevalence of multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Its primary clinical goals are to reduce maternal anemia and improve neonatal outcomes, including reducing the risk of low birth weight (LBW), small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births, and preterm delivery.
