Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Unizo is a generic formulation of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) omeprazole, developed and manufactured by Uni-Tech Pharmaceutical (Pvt.) Ltd. in Pakistan. It is primarily indicated for the treatment and management of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. As a substituted benzimidazole, the active ingredient omeprazole functions by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) located on the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. This action effectively blocks the final step of gastric acid production, leading to a significant reduction in both basal and stimulated acid secretion regardless of the stimulus.
