Overview

Unmodified EBV-specific T cells (EBVSTs) are a form of adoptive cellular immunotherapy consisting of autologous or allogeneic T lymphocytes that have been expanded ex vivo to specifically recognize and eliminate cells expressing Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antigens. Unlike genetically engineered products such as CAR-T cells, these EBVSTs utilize their endogenous T-cell receptors (TCRs) to identify viral peptides presented by HLA molecules on the surface of infected or malignant cells. Developed primarily by investigators at Baylor College of Medicine and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, EBVSTs are utilized to treat EBV-associated malignancies, including Hodgkin lymphoma, B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In clinical research, they have demonstrated a favorable safety profile and are frequently employed as a benchmark control group to evaluate the long-term risks, such as genotoxicity and secondary malignancies, associated with modified cellular therapies.
