unoprostone isopropyl

Unoprostone isopropyl is a synthetic docosanoid and a structural analogue of an inactive biosynthetic cyclic derivative of arachidonic acid (13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2α). It acts as a prodrug that, upon ocular administration, lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The drug primarily increases the outflow of aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork and possibly via the uveoscleral pathway. Its mechanism may involve stimulation of calcium (Ca2+)-activated BK channels and ClC-2 chloride channels in the trabecular meshwork. Unoprostone isopropyl does not significantly affect aqueous humor production or systemic cardiovascular/pulmonary function[1][2][3][4][5][8].
