Overview

Unrelated umbilical cord blood infusion is a cellular therapy consisting of hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells harvested from the umbilical cord and placenta of an allogeneic donor not related to the recipient. It is being investigated as a consolidation treatment for elderly patients (aged 60-80) with intermediate- or high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who have achieved complete remission after induction therapy. The infusion aims to provide a graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect, where donor-derived immune cells identify and eliminate residual leukemic cells, while also supporting hematopoietic recovery. In clinical trials, this therapy is often administered in combination with chemotherapy agents such as decitabine and cytarabine to improve disease-free survival and reduce relapse rates in older populations who may not be candidates for standard high-intensity allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
