Overview

**UQ-CSL V451** was an investigational, MF59-adjuvanted recombinant protein-subunit COVID-19 vaccine developed by The University of Queensland and CSL. It contained a mammalian-cell-produced SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein held in its prefusion conformation with UQ's molecular clamp technology, which incorporated HIV-1 glycoprotein 41-derived sequences. Administered intramuscularly, the vaccine was designed to induce anti-spike neutralising antibodies and cellular immune responses to prevent COVID-19. Phase 1 testing showed a favourable safety profile and robust immune responses, but the program was not advanced to Phase 2/3 because vaccine-induced antibodies to the gp41-derived clamp interfered with certain HIV diagnostic assays, producing false-positive test results without causing HIV infection.
