Overview

Uracyst is a sterile 2% sodium chondroitin sulfate solution administered intravesically as a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) replenishment therapy for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). It is based on the observation that many IC/BPS patients have defects in the bladder’s GAG layer; intravesical chondroitin sulfate is thought to restore this protective mucosal barrier, reducing permeability to urinary irritants and thereby alleviating pain, urgency, and frequency.[1][3][6][11] Developed by Stellar Pharmaceuticals (now Tribute Pharmaceuticals Canada), Uracyst is supplied as a 20 mL instillation containing 400 mg chondroitin sulfate and is used in repeated bladder instillations over weeks to months, with clinical studies and audits showing symptomatic improvement and good local tolerability.[1][3][6][8][11]
