Urea moisturizer is a topical emollient and keratolytic agent used to treat dry or rough skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, xerosis (dry skin), ichthyosis (scaly skin), dermatitis (including atopic and contact dermatitis), corns and calluses. It is also used for the debridement of hyperkeratotic lesions and to soften damaged or ingrown nails. The mechanism of action involves breaking down the protein keratin in the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum), which helps exfoliate dead cells and increase moisture retention by drawing water into the epidermis. At higher concentrations (>10%), it acts as a chemical exfoliant; at lower concentrations it primarily functions as a humectant. Synthetic urea is used in these products[1][2][3][4][6].
