Overview

URG501 is a pentosan-based glycosaminoglycan (GAG) replacement therapy being developed by Urigen Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS). The drug is designed to restore or support the protective GAG layer of the bladder epithelium, which is often deficient or damaged in patients suffering from IC/BPS. By replenishing this layer, URG501 aims to prevent irritating urinary components from penetrating the bladder wall and causing inflammation and pain. URG501 is a small molecule formulation based on pentosan polysulfate sodium, which is currently the only FDA-approved oral therapy for this indication.
