Uribel

Uribel is an FDA-approved multi-ingredient oral medication developed by Mission Pharmacal for the symptomatic relief of discomfort, pain, urgency, and spasms associated with lower urinary tract irritation. The formulation contains five active components that provide a synergistic therapeutic effect: methenamine, benzoic acid, phenyl salicylate, methylene blue, and hyoscyamine sulfate. Methenamine acts as a prodrug that degrades into formaldehyde in acidic urine, providing bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties. Benzoic acid serves as a urinary acidifier to facilitate this degradation. Hyoscyamine sulfate is a parasympatholytic that relaxes smooth muscle to alleviate urinary spasms. Phenyl salicylate is metabolized to release salicylate, which provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, while methylene blue offers weak antiseptic properties. Uribel is commonly indicated for symptoms resulting from lower urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, and painful bladder syndrome, as well as for discomfort following diagnostic procedures.
