Overview

Uridine is a naturally occurring pyrimidine nucleoside that plays a critical role in various biological processes, including nucleic acid synthesis, glycogen synthesis, and cellular metabolism. It is found in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid at higher concentrations than other nucleosides. Uridine enters cells via nucleoside transporters and is essential for the formation of cell membranes, synaptic structures in neurons, and the regulation of metabolic pathways such as the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway. It has been investigated experimentally for managing neuropsychiatric deficits associated with cerebrovascular diseases (often in combination with cytidine), but its clinical use remains investigational or experimental[4][6][8]. The mechanism of action primarily involves serving as a substrate for RNA synthesis and contributing to energy metabolism.
