Overview

Uridine monophosphate (UMP) is a pyrimidine nucleotide composed of the nucleobase uracil, the sugar ribose, and one phosphate group. It is a fundamental building block of RNA and plays a central role in cellular metabolism as both an intermediate in pyrimidine biosynthesis and as a precursor for other nucleotides. In humans, it is synthesized from orotidylate via decarboxylation by UMP synthase. As a supplement, UMP has been studied for its potential to enhance cognitive function, increase synapse density, support neurotransmitter synthesis (notably acetylcholine and dopamine), improve mood, reduce nerve pain when combined with B vitamins, protect mitochondria and heart function, reduce inflammation, and support brain health. It easily crosses the blood-brain barrier when taken orally[1][2][6][7][8][10].
