Uridine triphosphate (UTP) is a pyrimidine nucleoside triphosphate composed of the base uracil linked to ribose and esterified with three phosphate groups at the 5′ position. It is a naturally occurring nucleotide that serves as a substrate for RNA synthesis during transcription and acts as an energy source or activator in various metabolic reactions, such as glycogen synthesis and galactose metabolism[4]. UTP is also an endogenous agonist of P2Y2 receptors on ciliated respiratory epithelium[3], where it can modulate ion transport and mucociliary clearance. Experimentally, it has been studied for its effects on smooth muscle contraction via depolarization mechanisms involving activation of cation currents and inhibition of ATP-sensitive potassium channels[6]. UTP has been investigated in the diagnosis of lung diseases, including lung cancer[1].
