Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Urinary human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a highly purified glycoprotein hormone obtained from the urine of pregnant women. It mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH) and is used as a pharmaceutical agent primarily for fertility treatments in women to induce ovulation and in men to stimulate testosterone production and spermatogenesis. In children, it is used for prepubertal cryptorchidism. The mechanism involves binding to the LH/chorionic gonadotropin receptor on target tissues such as ovarian theca cells or testicular Leydig cells, stimulating steroidogenesis—progesterone in females and testosterone in males[2][4][5][7]. Urinary hCG preparations are distinct from recombinant forms by their source material.
