Urochloa mutica pollen extract, derived from Para grass, is a biologic allergenic extract used for the diagnosis and treatment of IgE-mediated allergic diseases. It is primarily indicated for use in diagnostic skin testing (such as skin prick tests) to identify specific sensitivities and as part of allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization) for patients with allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and seasonal asthma. The extract works by gradually desensitizing the patient's immune system through repeated exposure to the allergen. This process induces immunological tolerance, typically characterized by a shift from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) response, along with the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies that compete with IgE for allergen binding.
