Overview

Uropathogenic E. coli Avidocin is a preclinical-stage antibacterial agent being developed by Pylum Biosciences (formerly AvidBiotics) for the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs). The drug belongs to Pylum's proprietary Avidocin™ platform, which consists of engineered R-type bacteriocins (pyocins). These are naturally occurring defensive proteins of bacteria that have been re-engineered to selectively recognize and kill specific bacterial pathogens. Uropathogenic E. coli Avidocin is precisely engineered to target and kill uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) while leaving healthy gut and urinary microbiota undisturbed. Unlike traditional broad-spectrum antibiotics, Avidocin proteins employ a narrow-spectrum, bactericidal killing mechanism that bypasses conventional antibiotic resistance strategies. Preclinical studies have demonstrated efficacy in infection models via oral or parenteral administration.
