UroPhos-K

UroPhos-K is a slow-release formulation of neutral potassium phosphate developed for the treatment of absorptive hypercalciuria and the prevention of recurrent nephrolithiasis (kidney stones). Each tablet contains 155 mg of phosphate and 8 mEq of potassium in a wax matrix designed to minimize gastrointestinal side effects and maintain a neutral urinary pH (approximately 7.0). The drug works by reducing urinary calcium excretion through three primary mechanisms: decreasing intestinal calcium absorption, inhibiting bone resorption, and enhancing renal calcium reabsorption. By lowering urinary calcium and preventing sodium-induced calciuria, UroPhos-K discourages the formation of calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate crystals. It was evaluated in a Phase III randomized, double-blind clinical trial sponsored by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) as a potential alternative to potassium citrate.
