Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) combined with vitamin E is a therapeutic combination used primarily for treating nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and other liver conditions. UDCA is a hydrophilic bile acid that protects hepatocytes and cholangiocytes from bile acid-induced damage, reduces oxidative stress, and has choleretic effects. It works by displacing more toxic bile acids, protecting against reactive oxygen species (ROS), and stimulating anti-apoptotic pathways. Vitamin E functions as an antioxidant, complementing UDCA's hepatoprotective effects. Clinical studies have shown that this combination significantly improves liver function tests in long-term use and is very well tolerated. The combination has been studied in various liver conditions including NASH and methotrexate-induced liver injury in pediatric leukemia patients.
