Overview

URST1 (Up-regulated in solid tumor 1) is a cancer-specific oncoprotein identified as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target, particularly in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Research presented at ASCO 2023 indicates that URST1 is significantly overexpressed in a majority of lung cancer cases, and its high expression is independently associated with poor patient prognosis following radical surgery. Mechanistically, URST1 promotes cancer cell growth and invasive potential. Therapeutic strategies targeting URST1 include siRNA-mediated knockdown and small molecule inhibitors, which have demonstrated the ability to suppress tumor cell proliferation by inducing G2/M phase arrest and cell death. The development of these therapeutic agents is primarily associated with research institutions such as the University of Tokyo and Shiga University of Medical Science.
