Overview

Urucum is a botanical drug and pigment extract derived from the seeds of the *Bixa orellana* plant, native to tropical regions. Its primary active constituents are the carotenoids **bixin** (fat-soluble) and **norbixin** (water-soluble), which provide potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In clinical dentistry, urucum is utilized as a photosensitizer in **antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT)**; when activated by blue light (typically 395-480 nm), it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that eliminate microorganisms responsible for conditions like halitosis. Beyond dentistry, urucum preparations are studied for their ability to accelerate wound healing by promoting fibroblast proliferation and collagen maturation, and for their potential hypolipidemic effects in managing hypertriglyceridemia.
