Overview

Ustilago maydis is a biotrophic plant-pathogenic fungus that causes corn smut disease in maize, leading to biomass and yield loss. It is extensively studied as a model organism to understand fungal pathogenicity, host-pathogen interactions, and metabolic processes. Research indicates its ability to exploit host signaling pathways, such as lateral root regulators and jasmonic acid signaling, to induce gall formation. Furthermore, U. maydis is utilized in biotechnological applications for the production of valuable chemicals like itaconic acid and mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs).
