UT 380

**UT 380** is a long-acting, non-hormonal *copper-based intrauterine device (IUD)* used for contraception. Its main active ingredient is copper, which is wound around a flexible polyethylene frame. Once inserted into the uterus, the copper ions exert a cytotoxic effect on sperm and egg, inhibiting fertilization and preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. It is effective immediately upon insertion and can be used both as a regular contraceptive method and as emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days (some sources specify up to 7 days) after unprotected intercourse. The device is reversible, suitable for a range of women (nulliparous, primiparous, multiparous), and provides protection for up to 5 years. UT 380 contains barium sulphate for radiopacity and includes a nylon thread for removal[1][4][6].
