Overview
Utilin is an immunomodulator derived from *Mycobacterium phlei*, a non-pathogenic acid-fast bacterium. It functions as an immune enhancer by stimulating the immune system, specifically T lymphocytes, and increasing the phagocytic activity of granulocytes. It also promotes the function and metabolism of the monocyte-macrophage system and the release of various lymphokines and immune mediators, including O2-, CSF, and IL-1. This leads to enhanced non-specific anti-infective and specific anti-tumor actions. Utilin has been investigated for conditions such as asthma and is also used as an auxiliary treatment for tuberculosis and for general immune enhancement.
