UV endonuclease from Micrococcus luteus is an enzyme purified from the bacterium Micrococcus luteus. It plays a crucial role in DNA repair by recognizing and acting upon DNA damaged by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Specifically, it functions as a cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPyD)–DNA glycosylase/abasic lyase, initiating the excision repair pathway by making single-strand breaks in UV-irradiated DNA at the sites of pyrimidine dimers. This enzyme has been investigated for its potential therapeutic applications in repairing UV-induced DNA damage in human cells, particularly in the context of preventing and treating skin conditions like actinic keratoses and skin cancers.
