UV-inactivated reovirus refers to reovirus particles that have been rendered non-infectious by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. This process inactivates the virus, preventing replication, but preserves structural and immunogenic properties. While replication-competent reovirus is known for its oncolytic (cancer cell lytic) properties, UV-inactivated reovirus acts as an immunomodulatory agent. In preclinical studies, UV-inactivated reovirus has been shown to function as an adjuvant, enhancing activation of dendritic cells and the priming of tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes. It can also boost antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) when combined with agents like anti-CD20 antibodies. Thus, UV-inactivated reovirus is explored primarily as a vaccine adjuvant or immunostimulant, rather than a direct oncolytic therapy[1][2].
