Overview

Uva ursi, derived from the leaves of the *Arctostaphylos uva-ursi* plant, is a traditional herbal remedy primarily used for the treatment of lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) and inflammatory conditions of the bladder. Its therapeutic activity is largely attributed to the phenolic glycoside arbutin. Upon oral ingestion, arbutin is hydrolyzed by intestinal bacteria to hydroquinone, which is subsequently absorbed, conjugated in the liver (primarily as glucuronides and sulfates), and excreted via the kidneys. In the presence of alkaline urine (pH > 7), these conjugates are hydrolyzed back into free hydroquinone, which exhibits potent antiseptic and antibacterial properties against common uropathogens such as *Escherichia coli* and *Staphylococcus aureus*. Due to the potential for hydroquinone-induced toxicity, including liver damage and ocular concerns with prolonged exposure, uva ursi is typically recommended for short-term use only.
