UVB-irradiated platelets are **platelet concentrates exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) light irradiation** prior to transfusion. This process is designed to reduce the immunogenicity of platelet transfusions, specifically to abolish or reduce lymphocyte activity in the product and potentially prevent alloimmunization—most notably, the development of HLA antibodies after transfusion. UVB irradiation does not significantly compromise the core platelet functions, survival, or post-transfusion efficacy when used at appropriate doses and storage periods (typically up to 48 hours). However, longer storage after irradiation can lead to deteriorating platelet quality. The UVB irradiation targets lymphocyte-mediated immune responses without substantially impairing the hemostatic capability of the platelets. The preparation is primarily being studied and used as a method to reduce alloimmune reactions in patients who require repeated platelet transfusions, such as those with hematological malignancies.[1][2][5]
