Overview

V590 is an investigational recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-based vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine was developed through a collaboration between Merck and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), utilizing the same rVSV technology platform employed in Merck's approved Ebola Zaire virus vaccine (ERVEBO). The candidate was designed as a single-dose vaccine to express the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to induce protective immunity. Despite receiving initial funding support from BARDA and the U.S. Department of Defense, Merck discontinued the development of V590 in January 2021 after Phase 1 clinical trial results demonstrated immune responses that were inferior to those seen following natural infection and those reported for other COVID-19 vaccines.
