V7-CMS nanoparticles are theranostic, 40 nm colloidal mesoporous silica (CMS) nanoparticles designed for the detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer. These nanoparticles feature vermiform pores, a chitosan coating, and are conjugated with the V7 peptide, a variant of the pH-low insertion peptide (pHLIP). This configuration provides a dual acidic pH-specific targeting system, allowing for preferential accumulation and drug/contrast agent release in the acidic microenvironment of tumors (pH ~6.6) compared to healthy tissue (pH 7.4). Developed by researchers at the University of Louisville, they have been evaluated in preclinical models using multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) for high-sensitivity tumor identification and targeted delivery.
