Overview

Vacc-C5 is a therapeutic HIV vaccine candidate developed to slow down or stop the induction of immune hyperactivation, a key driver of disease progression in HIV infection. It is based on synthetic peptides derived from the C5 region of the gp120 protein on the surface of HIV. The vaccine aims to induce non-neutralizing antibodies against this region, mimicking natural immune responses observed in long-term non-progressors (individuals who control HIV without medication). By generating these antibodies, Vacc-C5 seeks to reduce damaging immune activation and potentially prevent or reverse immune collapse in chronically infected patients. It has been studied both as a potential therapy for people living with HIV (including those at risk of immune collapse, newly infected patients, those with treatment-resistant strains, and those intolerant to existing therapies) and as a preventive vaccine for high-risk populations. Early research demonstrated that blood from natural viral suppressors showed significant antibody reactivity to Vacc-C5[1][3][5].
