This is a combination therapy consisting of a hepatitis B vaccine (active immunization) and hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG, passive immunization). The combination is used primarily for post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, especially in high-risk situations such as infants born to mothers who are HBsAg-positive, individuals with accidental exposure to HBV-contaminated blood or body fluids, sexual partners of persons with acute HBV infection, and non-responders or those refusing vaccination. The vaccine stimulates the recipient’s own immune system to produce protective antibodies against HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), providing long-term immunity. HBIG provides immediate but temporary protection by supplying anti-HBs antibodies derived from human plasma donors with high titers against HBsAg. When administered together—typically at different injection sites—the efficacy in preventing chronic HBV infection is significantly higher than either agent alone; effectiveness rates range from 85%–98% in perinatal exposure settings[1][3][5][7]. This regimen does not interfere with the active immune response generated by the vaccine[6].
