Overview

Vaccinia Immune Globulin (VIG) is a biologic therapeutic consisting of purified human immunoglobulin G (IgG) derived from the pooled plasma of individuals who have been immunized with the vaccinia (smallpox) vaccine. It serves as a passive immunotherapeutic agent, providing immediate neutralizing antibodies against the vaccinia virus and other orthopoxviruses. In the context of NIAID-sponsored research, this specific intramuscular formulation was utilized as an investigational new drug (IND) to manage severe complications of vaccinia vaccination—such as progressive vaccinia, eczema vaccinatum, and generalized vaccinia—or accidental exposures occurring during HIV vaccine trials that employed vaccinia virus vectors. The treatment aims to neutralize viral particles and facilitate their clearance from the body.
