Overview

Vaccinia Melanoma Cell Lysate (VMCL) is an investigational therapeutic cancer vaccine developed by the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre in collaboration with the Sydney Melanoma Unit. The vaccine is produced by infecting melanoma cell lines with the vaccinia virus, followed by lysis of the cells to create a product containing a broad spectrum of melanoma-associated antigens. The presence of the vaccinia virus acts as a potent adjuvant, enhancing the immunogenicity of the tumor antigens and stimulating the patient's immune system to mount a T-cell mediated response against melanoma cells. VMCL has been primarily evaluated as an adjuvant therapy in Phase III clinical trials for patients with high-risk primary and Stage II melanoma, and has also been investigated in the setting of advanced metastatic disease.
