Vaccinia virus-inoculated rabbit skin extract is a biological analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent derived from the skin of rabbits that have been inoculated with the vaccinia virus. It is primarily utilized for the management of chronic pain conditions, including lumbago (low back pain), neuralgia, and post-herpetic neuralgia. The drug's mechanism of action is distinct from traditional NSAIDs or opioids; it primarily works by activating the descending pain inhibitory system, specifically the serotonergic and noradrenergic pathways, which modulate pain transmission in the spinal cord. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators such as bradykinin and provide neuroprotective effects. Originally developed by Nippon Zoki Pharmaceutical, it is also manufactured and marketed by companies like Weishi Pharmaceutical (Rugao) Co., Ltd. in China under the brand name Analgecine.
