vadadustat

Vadadustat is an oral small molecule drug used to treat anemia caused by chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults who have been on dialysis for at least 3 months. It belongs to the class of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitors. Vadadustat works by inhibiting HIF-prolyl-hydroxylases, which leads to stabilization and increased activity of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). This results in increased endogenous erythropoietin production, improved iron mobilization, and stimulation of red blood cell production, thereby correcting anemia associated with CKD[1][2][3][5][6][8]. The drug is administered orally once daily and was developed as an alternative to injectable erythropoiesis-stimulating agents.
