Overview

**Vadadustat + adefovir** is a combination of two small molecule drugs: vadadustat, an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl-hydroxylase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of anemia in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis, and adefovir (commonly administered as its prodrug adefovir dipivoxil), a nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Vadadustat mimics hypoxic conditions to stimulate erythropoietin production, thereby increasing red blood cell synthesis[4][5]. Adefovir exerts antiviral effects by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication in HBV-infected cells[3]. There is no established clinical use for this specific combination and no documented additive or antagonistic pharmacokinetic interaction between vadadustat and adefovir, although data show no significant pharmacokinetic changes when coadministered[2][5].
