Vagiferon

Vagiferon is a multi-component pharmaceutical product developed by the Russian company Firn M for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the female reproductive system. It is a combination therapy formulated as vaginal suppositories, containing recombinant human interferon alfa-2b, metronidazole, and fluconazole. The interferon alfa-2b component acts as an agonist at the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), triggering immunomodulatory and antiviral pathways that support the local immune response. Metronidazole provides broad-spectrum activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa by disrupting their DNA structure, while fluconazole acts as an antifungal agent by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, which is essential for fungal cell membrane synthesis. Vagiferon is specifically indicated for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, bacterial vaginitis, and mixed-infection vaginitis (bacterial, fungal, and trichomonal).
