Overview

Vaginal lactobacilli refers to a live biotherapeutic product, typically formulated as a vaginal capsule, containing specific strains of *Lactobacillus* bacteria (such as *L. crispatus*, *L. gasseri*, or *L. jensenii*). These probiotics are intended to restore and maintain the natural vaginal microflora, which is predominantly composed of lactobacilli in healthy individuals. In clinical oncology, particularly for patients undergoing pelvic radiotherapy for gynecologic malignancies like cervical or endometrial cancer, these capsules are evaluated for their ability to prevent or mitigate radiotherapy-induced vaginal damage and dysbiosis. The bacteria function by producing lactic acid to maintain an acidic vaginal pH, generating hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins to inhibit the overgrowth of pathogenic flora, and competing for adhesion sites on the vaginal epithelium, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting mucosal integrity.
