Overview

Vaginal microbiota transplant (VMT) is an investigational live biotherapeutic therapy being developed by Johns Hopkins University for the treatment of recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV). The therapy involves the transfer of cervicovaginal secretions from a healthy, screened donor to a recipient with BV. The goal is to restore a healthy, Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiome, thereby displacing the polymicrobial community characteristic of BV. [2, 7] The VMT-01 Phase 1 clinical trial was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this approach, where a single dose of the transplant material is administered vaginally after a course of standard antibiotic treatment.
