Vagisept

Vagisept is a combination small molecule drug developed by the Russian pharmaceutical company Firn M for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis and various forms of vaginitis. Formulated as a vaginal suppository, it contains two active ingredients: metronidazole (150 mg) and fluconazole (200 mg). Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial that acts by disrupting the DNA of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, making it effective against pathogens like *Gardnerella vaginalis* and *Trichomonas vaginalis*. Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal agent that inhibits the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, thereby blocking the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, particularly targeting *Candida albicans*. This dual-action formulation is designed to treat mixed infections and prevent the fungal overgrowth that often complicates antibiotic therapy for vaginal infections. Vagisept is approved and marketed in Russia.
